How did CS get to this point?

The pandemic fundamentally changed audience behavior across the performing arts sector, and Chicago Sinfonietta was not immune. Like many arts organizations, our audience numbers and contributions have not returned to pre-Covid levels. Over that same period, an overreliance on grant funding meant that other revenue streams weren't developed enough to sustain the organization once those grants ran out.

Why is the organization taking a Strategic Renewal Period?

The issues facing Chicago Sinfonietta didn’t happen overnight, and can’t be solved overnight. The organization is using this time to focus its resources on fundraising, review its operating model, and thoughtfully re-imagine what Sinfonietta’s business model looks like for the next 40 years.

No, in fact it’s the opposite. Sinfonietta’s Board and CEO are taking the responsible step to stabilize the organization and ensure that they have a fiscally sound and sustainable basis from which to grow future artistic and educational programs.

At this time, the organization aims to relaunch in 2027, with a special fundraising event around MLK Day ahead of a refreshed program for the following season. Sinfonietta’s Board and leadership are instituting this pause to ensure the organization can re-orient and come back in a position of strength and sustainability.

Chicago Sinfonietta is incredibly grateful for the tremendous support the organization has historically received from this community. This dedication has brought the organization forward for decades, and the Strategic Renewal Period will build a bridge into a vibrant and sustainable future. The Board and CEO will continue fund- and friend-raising in order to stabilize the organization by developing a strategic plan that includes financial, administrative, and impact goals, implementation plans, and success metrics.
