a JOYFUL JANUARY CELEBRATION OF
DR. KING AND CHICAGO SINFONIETTA
Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. believed hope and joy could change things, even in the face of fierce opposition. That belief is what this January’s concert celebrates, with full orchestra, a gospel choir, and Chicagoans from every neighborhood singing “We Shall Overcome” as one.

“We must not allow our creative protest to degenerate into physical violence. Again and again, we must rise to the majestic heights of meeting physical force with soul force.”
— Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.
This is your chance to make your January more joyful. A violin that sings over a full orchestra, a gospel choir that makes the floor hum, and a few hundred neighbors singing “We Shall Overcome” creating a sense of unity.
WHAT THIS IS FOR
Chicago Sinfonietta has gathered every January since our founding almost 40 years ago to celebrate Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., and this concert is our first since the start of our Strategic Renewal Period. We open with Jessie Montgomery’s Soul Force, a piece named for the phrase Dr. King used to describe nonviolent resistance. That phrase gives this year’s program its name too: joy and hope held with enough strength to change things.
WHAT YOU’LL HEAR
The first half honors the young musicians who got their start with us. Jessie Montgomery’s Soul Force opens the night, followed by the tender “Mother and Child” from William Grant Still’s Suite for Violin and Piano. Violinist Kai Isoke Ali-Landing then joins us for Florence Price’s Adoration for violin and orchestra, a piece so warm it feels like being handed a cup of tea.
After intermission, the night moves to the place where Dr. King’s movement started: the church. Congregations sang, organized, and planned non-violent protests inside those sanctuaries, and the songs traveled into the streets with them. You’ll hear that tradition live, with a gospel choir and the Sinfonietta building toward Richard Smallwood’s Total Praise, and then the whole audience joins in for “We Shall Overcome.”
EVERYONE’S INVITED
This is also our a benefit for Chicago Sinfonietta, and because we want everyone to join the party, tickets start at $38. If you’d like to give beyond your ticket, that’s entirely your call, and every gift supports the musicians and programs that make nights like this possible.
Come as a joyful warrior, bring someone you love, and warm your soul in January.
