a modern marvel in Millennium Park
The Harris Theater is located in the cultural heart of downtown Chicago, against the spectacular backdrop of Millennium Park—the top tourist attraction in the Midwest. As the home venue of nearly 30 of Chicago’s not-for-profit arts organizations and a presenter of great artists from around the world, the Harris Theater boasts some of the most diverse offerings of any multi-use venue in downtown Chicago.
Overview
The Harris Theater was the first multi-use performing arts venue to be built in the downtown Chicago area after 1929, named for its primary benefactors Joan and Irving Harris. The theater, which is largely underground due to Grant Park-related height restrictions, serves as Millennium Park’s indoor performing venue, complementing the outdoor Jay Pritzker Pavilion.
Today, the nonprofit theater features the most diverse selections of performances of any venue in Chicago, hosting the city’s most acclaimed music and dance institutions as well as world-renowned national and international artists. The Harris Theater’s original group of 12 resident companies has grown to include 30 unique non-profit organizations, making it home to Chicago’s most vibrant arts community.
