THE COMPOSERS

Lauren Christy (b. 1967) , originally from London, England, began her music career as a solo recording artist, receiving an American Music Awards nomination for Best New Artist in 1994. Christy transitioned to producing as co-creator of The Matrix, which has worked with many popular artists including David Bowie and Avril Lavigne.

After studying classical piano at the University of Western Ontario, Stephan Moccio (b. 1972) began a career in songwriting. He has written for many popular artists, including Celine Dion and Josh Groban. In 2010, he co-wrote I Believe for the opening to the Vancouver Winter Olympics.

THE HISTORY

Christy and Moccio wrote Stand in the Light in 2016 for Jordan Smith’s (winner of The Voice) debut album. Since starting his music career, Smith has been committed to promoting self-acceptance and confidence for those who feel left out of society. His positive message has turned him into the best-selling participant of The Voice.

THE MEANING

Stand in the Light was written to emphasize the importance of being true to oneself and one’s identity – a powerful message that the songwriters and the original singer of the song, Jordan Smith, consider to be a crucial part of existing in the modern world.

Musicality , the Chicago youth music ensemble, will be performing this touching piece.
