New Leadership at Chicago Sinfonietta Marks A First in the Field

Newly Elected Board Vice Chair Althea Alviar Lee Joins New Chair Wendy Lewis to Lead Orchestra’s Board

Chicago Sinfonietta is pleased to announce the election of Althea Alviar Lee as its new Vice Chair, succeeding Genhi Givings Bailey, who served in this capacity since 2022. Lee joins newly elected Board Chair Wendy LewisPresident and CEO Sidney Jackson—whose tenure with the organization began earlier this summer—and Music Director Mei-Ann Chen to create a diverse quartet of executive, board, and artistic leadership that is unmatched in the field.

Together, the orchestra’s leaders are dedicated to ensuring that founder Paul Freeman’s mission for the Sinfonietta—to create a culturally responsive organization that advocates for inclusivity in all aspects of its work—is carried forward, as well as to the ideal that those values are embodied at all levels of the organization, on stage and off.

Chicago Sinfonietta’s new President and CEO Sidney Jackson, who joined the Sinfonietta in May, said, “This moment is a true inflection point for our esteemed organization, as we begin an inspired 2025-26 season designed by Maestra Chen. I’m thrilled to have Wendy and Althea as two outstanding partners to lead the Board in our collective efforts to embrace excellence—both artistic and otherwise—while further entrenching ourselves in the greater Chicago communities. Both of these outstanding leaders bring a wide range of perspectives and deep executive experience to our team, and we are energized for an exciting year of imaginative, thoughtful programs and educational initiatives.”

Althea Alviar Lee, incoming Board Vice Chair, said, “I was drawn to Chicago Sinfonietta by the feeling of community and connection that its performances create for everyone in the audience. I have experienced firsthand the impact of the Sinfonietta’s work and am honored to have a role on the Board that allows me to help amplify it and create more connections through community engagement.”

As a board member, Lee has served as secretary and on the Nominating & Governance, Finance, and Executive Committees. She was the founding chair of the Sinfonietta’s Associates Board prior to her appointment to the Board of Directors in 2016, and brings many years of experience in human resources and talent management to her role.

“It makes me so proud to lead an organization such as this one that is so well aware of and connected to its legacy,” said Board Chair Wendy Lewis. “Looking ahead, it’s our intent that the Sinfonietta’s mission be embedded across all areas of our organization—through administration, performances, and community engagement initiatives—so that we have the opportunity to carry this distinguished legacy forward.”

Lewis has served on various committees of the Chicago Sinfonietta’s Board since 2016 and was elected as Chair of the Board this summer. She served as interim CEO during the organization’s search for President and CEO, and brings decades of experience in the diversity and inclusion space from her work with Major League Baseball and McDonald’s to her Board role.

Chicago Sinfonietta’s 2025-26 season is underway, and features five subscription programs, each performed in a distinguished Chicago venue— Studebaker Theater, Mandel Hall, The Auditorium, Harris Theater, and Pick-Saiger Hall—and in Naperville at Wentz Auditorium at North Central College.

Musician Spotlight

Chicago Sinfonietta is proud to welcome new musicians, Darren Carter and Caitlin Edwards, for our 2025-2026 season!

Darren Carter

Darren joins us as a section violist and was a third-year member of the Civic Orchestra of Chicago. Recently, Darren was appointed Assistant Principal of the Colorado Music Festival, and has also performed with the Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra, Charlotte Symphony Orchestra, and New World Symphony. In previous summers, he has attended and performed with the National Repertory Orchestra and Aspen Music Festival as an orchestral leadership fellow. Originally from Dallas, Texas, Darren earned his bachelor’s degree in music at Baylor University and his master’s at DePaul University, where he currently pursues a Performer’s Certificate and studies with Ann Marie Brink. In his spare time, Darren enjoys listening to music, playing games, and hiking Colorado’s famous 14ers.

When asked “What is it about Chicago Sinfonietta that made you choose to audition?” he replied:

“I was drawn to the Sinfonietta’s mission to promote new and less commonly performed music alongside the presentation of classic staples in the repertoire, which I believe are both important to the world of classical music. The orchestra seems to have a very positive and welcoming community, and I’m super excited to be a part of it.”

Caitlin Edwards

Caitlin joins us as a Violin Section 1 substitute. She is a former Freeman Orchestra Fellow. A visionary artist who seamlessly blends her cultural roots with her musical upbringing to curate performances that resonate with authenticity, impact, and joy. Her multifaceted career as a violinist, composer, and youth advocate has earned her widespread recognition as a musical force in Chicago and beyond, captivating audiences on both national and international stages.

In 2023, Caitlin released her first album of classical works, Mere Mortals, with pianist Daniel Schlosberg. In August 2021, she released her debut solo album, Exhale, a transcending work that merges the elegance of classical music with the soulful harmonies of gospel and neo-soul. She has performed and recorded alongside iconic artists such as Stevie Wonder, John Legend, Earth Wind and Fire, Ms. Lauryn Hill, Stewart Copeland, Common, Lucky Daye, Yolanda Adams, Nas, India Arie, PJ Morton, and more. Notably, Caitlin contributed her sound to the ReCollective Orchestra in recording the movie score for the Disney movie, “The Lion King,” at Sony Studios in April of 2019. She has received four Grammy certificates for her work on these projects.

Caitlin’s accolades include being a 2023 Sphinx MPower Artist Grant recipient, a 2022 Esteemed Artist Awardee from the Chicago Department of Cultural Affairs and Special Events, and a 2021 3Arts/Walder Foundation Award winner.

Behind the Magic of Bollywood & Beyond

This October, Bollywood & Beyond does just that by taking the audience on a trip from Mumbai to Paris to Taipei right before Diwali, the Festival of Lights.

The night kicks off with Symphony Masala, a celebration of 70 years of iconic Bollywood songs which were shaped by influences as wide-ranging as swing, disco, and Hollywood musicals. The result is a rich masala, or spice blend, that resonates deeply in daily Indian life, sung at weddings, echoed in marketplaces, and cherished communities around the globe. With Anuradha “Juju” Palakurthi on vocals and Roger Kalia on the podium, you’ll hear music from films such as Don, Namak Halal, and Dil Se shimmer with the power of a full orchestra.

After intermission, the program turns into a world tour. We begin with The Angel from Formosa by Tyzen Hsiao, a composer often known as the “Rachmaninoff of Taiwan” for his lush harmonies and lyrical melodies is a tender tribute to Taiwan.

Reena Esmail’s Teen Murti blends Indian ragas — melodic frameworks that shape mood and character — with Western strings. Maurice Ravel’s Mother Goose Suite spins fairy tales like Sleeping Beauty and Tom Thumb into enchanting soundscapes.

The finale is An-Lun Huang’s Saibei Dance, written in 1975 during the Cultural Revolution (1966-76), a turbulent chapter in China’s history. Rather than dwell on hardship, Huang drew inspiration from folk rhythms of the northern plateau near Inner Mongolia, creating music full of bounding energy and celebration. As Artistic Director Mei-Ann Chen notes, it reminds us that even in difficult times, we can always find joy.

Landing just before Diwali, the Festival of Lights, this concert shines in its own way: familiar stories and far-off traditions glowing side by side, reminding us that joy is always within reach.
