a Victorian masterpiece in Hyde Park
Mandel Hall stands as one of Chicago’s most distinguished concert venues, where over a century of musical excellence meets the grandeur of Victorian architecture. Recently restored to its original 1903 splendor with modern safety and comfort upgrades, this ornate 878-seat hall within the University of Chicago’s Reynolds Club offers an intimate and acoustically superior setting for classical music in the heart of Hyde Park.
Overview
Named for department store magnate Leon Mandel and designed by Shepley, Rutan, and Coolidge in 1903, Mandel Hall was modeled after the great hall of Crosby House, built in 1472 by London sheriff Sir John Crosby. The Chicago Symphony Orchestra performed the first concert there on December 21, 1903, establishing a tradition of musical excellence that continues today.
This historic venue has been the site of numerous world premieres, including Samuel Barber conducting the first performance of his “Capricorn Concerto” and Aaron Copland first playing his “Piano Sonata” for the public.
Following a comprehensive 2018 restoration, the hall now features improved acoustics and modern safety systems while preserving its original Victorian grandeur with ornate woodwork, leaded glass windows, and an impressive proscenium.
